Quote from Linford

"We were talking a lot about Home the last few weeks. Karin and I have chosen a life where pretty much every day we get to spend at home is a prize, a rare gift, something we worked for, an event drenched in gratitude. And yet, maybe home is not really about geography or air quality, or moonlight, or being in the city or out of the city, or in a red state or blue state, or in a music town or a working class town. Maybe home has more to do with the work we've all done as individuals to increasingly become people we can live with. Maybe home is the desire to live soulfully, the tiny ongoing decisions we make that allow the soul room to breathe.

That's our prayer for our extended musical family: that we would all find lives that allow the soul to thrive."

Trumpeting

Howdy ya'll. The latest news is the release of "Trumpet Child" from Over the Rhine. Now it's my favorite in my collection of OTR recordings, fancy that.

Currently, I'm reading Lynn Miller's "Power of Enough," knitting a sweater for Ginny from Blue Sky alpacas (yummy yarn), and getting ready for a camping trip.

I'm so ready for a break. Putting up all this food has made me tired. It's even more tiring than, like, practicing, even for hours on end.

Until next time....

P.S.If you live in Harrisonburg, go to Rocktown Yarns. It's the coolest store.

howdy again ya'll

Well, the circle comes around again, and I'm back to xanga-ing. I'm also back to knitting and reading after a long hiatus. For a good reason, though. Ryan and I were so involved in preparing for our chamber music recital "Beyond Ourselves" which raised over $5,000 for MCC's peace, advocacy, education, and bridge building work in the Middle East. It was such a wonderful day for us. And, amazing to see the Divine in the center of it all--in the planning, delivery, and response. It was Divine.

Now Ryan and I are both involved with the show "Around the World in 80 Days" at the Fulton in downtown Lancaster. I agreed to the 3 week run, questioning whether I would regret it or not. Nope. It's been great music (all originals by local talent Ron Barnett) and I will be sad to see the show go. It's also been so fun to play with my hubby in the pit and have our music worlds collide.

Of course, last weekend at EMHS, celebrating Mr. H's 25 years was fabulous. It took me back to high school, and I reflected on all the highs and lows of that time period; meanwhile, I gave thanks for where I am today, and what shaped me to become who I am now. It was a very busy weekend, so unfortunately I wasn't able to talk to everyone I would've liked to. But I give thanks for the "music web" that we share through TC and beyond....

Christmastime is Here

Between working, playing gigs, volleyball, working out, reading my book (see above), knitting my stockings, preparing for Christmas, hanging out with Aaron, Laura, and Abby (whoo hoo!), I've not been xanga-ing. I'll try to do better.

Anybody else out there like Macs? We're considering one, and it's on the horizon, hopefully.

The Christmas music playing is "Snow Angels" by Over the Rhine. Also, I like playing from the Charlie Brown Christmas piano book Ryan gave me. My favorite is the ice skating song.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Playing Around

It's been a great week of music. I've been preparing the Bach Cello Suite No.2 and yesterday I was able to play for Rachel Shapiro. A violist from NY who plays with Concertante. We met in Harrisburg, and it was a great lesson. I came away with additional ideas for the pieces, and it also confirmed what I've been thinking musically, too.

So I finally met/played with Neal Harnly. His neice was married, and I enjoyed playing in a quintet for the ceremony, playing some of Neal's arr. works. The other violist was Paul who was very nice too and plays with the NY Phil. I told Ryan, "People in the NY Phil. are actually nice." I get the impression classical musicians at that level are all cut-throat. Not so. (At least not all of them.) It was good playing this morning, and fun to meet these people I've heard so much about....

If there's ever just one viola CD you consider buying, get this one by Helen Callus. It's fabulous. She sounds great, so does her accompanist, and she's the sweetest person. And, these are viola works written by women composers. There are quite a few pieces on this collection by Rebecca Clarke, who is one of my favorites. Check it out!
